This typical landscape from a science fictional works film or a Wayne Bond movie demonstrates the use of proximity playing cards very well. Things are different in real life.

These cards are not sitting ducks. They can be more secure and capable than Hollywood portrays. Films almost never show proximity cards getting used in libraries, transport, and attendance systems; where, they are the domains where these cards are being used a great deal.

Proximity cards are a kind of smart cards. They store information and use airwaves to interact with greeting card readers. Card readers are devices that process data transmited from proximity playing cards. Based on what a target audience has been programmed for, it enables or refute access to a building and it can observe books borrowed from collection and so forth, The use of radio alerts during these cards has earned them the complex name radio frequency id (RFID) cards.

There are two varieties of RFID cards - passive and active. Passive cards operate on energy extracted from card readers. They have a tiny range; less than five centimeters.
